A Bit About Pinnacle SkyTower — Canada's Tallest Residential Building
Toronto’s waterfront skyline has a new high point. Pinnacle SkyTower topped out earlier this year at 351.85 metres and 106 storeys, claiming the title of Canada’s tallest building and the first residential supertall in North America to cross 100 occupied floors. The tower sits on the 1 Yonge Street parcel at the southern foot of Yonge, with direct sightlines to Lake Ontario, the harbour, and the Toronto Islands.
Project Scope
Designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects with Adamson Associates as architect of record, the tower combines 958 residential units, the Le Méridien Toronto Pinnacle Hotel on the lower podium and mid-tower floors, and roughly 80,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor amenities. The floor plate is a distinctive 12-sided geometry that the design team chose to handle wind loading at supertall scale, with the secondary benefit of giving more units corner exposures and panoramic lake views.
RJC Engineers led the structural design, working through significant lateral-load considerations driven by Toronto’s lake-edge wind environment. The building uses a reinforced-concrete core with outrigger walls at mechanical floors and a perimeter post-tensioned slab system that allowed Pinnacle’s self-perform concrete forming team to maintain a four-day floor cycle through most of the vertical climb.
Vertical transport is one of the more technically demanding parts of the project. KONE supplied a double-deck elevator package configured for residential and hotel use cases on shared shafts, with sky-lobby transfers at two mechanical floors. The amenity program includes a 70th-floor sky club, a pool deck, and a private dining room with full kitchen.
Why It Matters
Pinnacle SkyTower is the first North American residential project to clear 100 storeys, and it lands at a moment when the city’s supertall pipeline is doing serious work to remake the downtown skyline. Toronto already had three buildings over 300 metres before SkyTower topped out. The CN Tower aside, Pinnacle is now the city’s tallest occupied structure.
The build is also a case study in Toronto-style mass-concrete delivery. Most North American supertalls in this height class use composite or steel framing because of the speed advantage. Pinnacle’s all-concrete approach, paired with a self-perform forming crew working on a four-day cycle, took 25 months to go vertical on the residential floors. That’s a competitive number against composite framing on a comparable footprint, and it was achieved with crew sizes that several U.S. contractors have said they couldn’t field reliably for the same scope.
For the city’s planning context, the project is part of the LCBO Lakeshore master plan and sits on a Pinnacle land assembly that includes additional residential and commercial parcels still in design. Move-in for the residential units begins in late 2026, with hotel openings staged into 2027.
