Custom Air’s origin is specific. Ed and Peg Wuelfing started the company in Columbus in 1976 after Ed, then running the residential and new-construction division of another local HVAC contractor, proposed taking that side of the business over when his employer exited the new-home market. The name came from the firm’s largest early account, a builder of custom homes. The design-build model behind it, engineered systems for specific projects rather than speculative volume work, has stayed in place since.

Scale today: more than 125 full-time employees, over 25 service trucks, and both residential and commercial HVAC engineers on staff. There are three offices rather than one, in Columbus at 935 Claycraft Road, Dublin at 5800 Shier Rings Road, and Delaware at 18 E. William Street, each with its own phone line.

Technicians are screened, drug tested and certified, and the company runs a drug-free workplace with continuing training and safety classes. It has taken a safety award eleven times. Refrigerant recovery is licensed and 410A compliant. Ohio license number 26912 covers the work.

What the company commits to in writing is a one-year workmanship warranty layered on top of manufacturer coverage, upfront pricing with no hidden charges, and a 100 percent satisfaction standard. Extended warranties are available on the leading brands it installs, which include American Standard, Mitsubishi Electric, Rheem, Tempstar, Goodman and Honeywell, plus WaterFurnace for geothermal. There is also a maintenance agreement program and an online tool that produces an instant system estimate before anyone visits the house.

Beyond the Columbus, Dublin and Delaware cores, the published service list reaches Westerville, New Albany, Hilliard, Upper Arlington, Worthington, Powell, Lewis Center, Grove City, Pickerington, Canal Winchester, Newark, Granville, Lancaster, Marysville, Plain City, Mount Vernon and Circleville, among roughly ninety central Ohio communities.

A separate division handles custom homes and remodeling work. The company also runs a philanthropic program called Service To Others, through which employees volunteer on local causes.
