The most useful thing to know about Munro is what it stopped doing. In 2022 the company exited its maintenance division to concentrate entirely on landscape construction and installation. Most firms that build patios also cut grass, and the crews and the calendar end up competing; dropping maintenance is a deliberate choice to be a construction business. Commercial snow and ice management, including for homeowner associations, is the one seasonal service it kept.

The history goes back further than the company does. Phil Munro turned the work his father Don began in the early 1970s into a full-time business in 1987, and Phil’s son Jon later joined and earned certifications in paver installation, retaining walls, and pool and spa building. Three generations is the firm’s own description, and it is unusual for the trade to carry a pool-building credential alongside the hardscape ones.

Certifications on the construction side include Unilock Authorized Contractor status and segmental retaining wall certification. Retaining wall certification is the one that matters most to a homeowner: a seating wall built badly is a cosmetic problem, while a structural wall built badly is a failure that takes the ground with it.

The build list runs to inground pools, paver patios, walkways and driveways, retaining and seating walls, outdoor kitchens, fire features, ponds and waterfalls, planting and landscape lighting. Enough of those on one project and the pool, the deck, the kitchen and the lighting all come from one contractor rather than four.

The service area covers the western Detroit suburbs: South Lyon, Novi, Northville, Plymouth, Canton, Commerce, Milford, Farmington Hills, West Bloomfield, Orchard Lake Village, Dexter, Hamburg and Ann Arbor township. Existing clients are handled through an online portal.

The business is family-owned and veteran-owned.
