Rick Hammell started Hammell Homes in Evanston in 1986 with small handyman jobs, and the company has stayed in that repair-to-remodel lane ever since, expanding into full renovations after its first decade. Today the work spans kitchen, bathroom and basement remodels, handyman and home repair, plumbing, interior painting, door and window replacement, and hardwood and vinyl flooring.

The company became fully licensed, bonded and insured in the mid-2000s and holds Illinois general contractor license #09LICR-0564. That standing was recognized when the City of Evanston named Hammell Homes its Outstanding General Contractor of the Year through the Beautification Award, citing the complete gut rehab and restoration of 1810 Ashland Avenue.
