The shop is at 52-14 92nd Street in Elmhurst, and the work has carried the same name since 2003. Eden Brick Pointing Contractors holds New York City licence 1474625-DCA and takes jobs across Queens and the other boroughs, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Manhattan, plus Astoria and Flushing closer to home, then north into Yonkers and Westchester, with some work in New Jersey.

Pointing is not one job but three, and Eden draws the line between them. Repointing cuts out mortar that has weathered into voids and replaces it, which closes the path water takes into a wall and restores the strength those joints were carrying. Tuckpointing does the same structural job but sets two mortar colours in the joint, one matching the brick and one a traditional mortar shade, so the wall reads as finely jointed. Spot pointing applies the same technique to a small patch, the mortar equivalent of touching up paint.

Beyond the joints, the firm builds and repairs parapet walls, the roughly three-foot barrier that runs along a roof, terrace, balcony or walkway edge. In New York these walls do more than stop a fall: they have long served as fire separation, they help a building stand up to wind, and they hide roof equipment or make a roofline read flat. Window sills and lintels are another line of work, and the distinction matters on an older facade, since the sill slopes to shed water and supports the frame while the lintel spans the opening and carries load off the window itself. Eden will build either from a range of materials.

Two more services round out the list. Brick grinding covers cutting brick and opening holes through masonry, a job where a slip damages the surrounding brick and turns into a repair bill. Thorocoat and Thoroseal are water-based protective coatings for concrete and masonry; they resist water penetration and erosion while still letting vapour out of the wall, which is what keeps a coating from blistering and peeling, and they hold colour and suit cold climates. Block work, cement work and California stucco are handled in house as well.
